ABOUT ME

My DiaStory.

Diagnosed at the age of twelve, I remember worrying more about the fact that I was in hospital, over the fact that I had just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Thankfully with the support of my family and friends, alongside the wonderful doctors and nurses, my week there flew by, learning a lot of brand new information along the way. It was when I went back to school, that diabetes became a bit of a concern.

Like everyone else who is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, stuff like puberty, exams, even simply going for a night out with friends started to cause stress. Till I found the Maltese Diabetes Association Children's Summer Camp and started meeting other children who, like myself, were struggling with the same issues.

I got involved with the local diabetes association ever since, volunteering in events and even aided in the organisation of an international exchange. In 2018, I was lucky enough to be nominated to go to Czech Republic for IDF Europe's Leadership Camp. It was the first time I travelled alone, and the first time I met people from different countries living with diabetes. Saying I've learnt a lot would be an understatement.

Now I want to share my sweet life of living with diabetes with you! With the hope that my life journey could help out with yours, whether you're a person living with type 1 diabetes or not.

We love a little classic Frank Sinatra!

Right so, being it is my first blog post, I am going to hit you with some fun facts about me. Whether they actually are fun is subjective but you know, at least they're something to get to know me.

  1. Probably the most important thing you do need to know is that I am a wee bit of a coffee addict

  2. I've been living with type one diabetes for about eight years now, but do not exactly know my diaversary. What I do know is my month and year of diagnosis. That is April 2012.

  3. I am 20 years old. You do the math.

  4. I absolutely love travelling. There's something about visiting new places, trying new food, meeting new people and seeing new cultures that really makes me feel alive.

  5. On that note, I also love networking events. I believe everyone has their own unique stories and these events give you a wonderful opportunity to hear new stories and meet new people.

  6. I am particularly passionate about entrepreneurship and leadership.

  7. But I'm studying to become an accountant.

  8. I am from a tiny island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, that is, Malta.

  9. I am also fond of fashion and so, obviously, I work in fashion retail

  10. I am an IDF Youth Leader in Diabetes Trainee and have some big projects coming up in 2020 and 2021.

  11. I lived in Scotland for a short while and fell in love with the place.

  12. I have no favourite type of music, I listen to everything from classics to rap.

  13. My favourite time of year, hands down and without a shadow of a doubt, is Christmas time. I love Christmas food, Christmas movies, the Christmas vibe and decorations, Christmas songs and well you get the point.

  14. My biggest pet peeve is people cancelling last minute or when people think they know my diabetes more than I do.

  15. Right, and if you haven't noticed, I love to eat... a lot.

I think 15 facts about me are enough for now. I am also starting to blank, it's a thing about being put on the spot I reckon. You'll get to know more about me along the way, if you wish to stay.

Bonusfact 16: I like cheesy rhymes and puns, I'm sorry.
